On the afternoon of March 22, the scientific conference "The role of dietary supplements in improving performance and preventing doping for high-performance athletes" was held in Hanoi. Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong attended.
Speaking at the Conference, Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong emphasized that in the cause of building and developing the country, especially since the comprehensive renovation process, the Party and State have soon had an orientation on the position of the country. The role of Science and Technology (STI).
Science and technology is a decisive factor to accelerate the country's economic, political and social development. For the field of sports and sports, science and technology are increasingly important. In modern sports training, with increasing volume and intensity of exercise, the athlete's body is required to respond and adapt more and more to be able to achieve the expected results. To achieve your goals, recovery after a large amount of exercise plays a very important role.
In a daily diet with traditional foods, it is impossible to compensate for the substances consumed during exercise, so research and use of dietary supplements is a problem. It has been researched and applied in practice by many countries around the world.
Since then, according to Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong, the workshop focused on clarifying the theoretical basis of using dietary supplements, the current situation of using dietary supplements in our country, as well as the practical experience of some countries. around the world, on that basis advise state management agencies to effectively direct and implement this very urgent and topical issue in the entire athlete training and coaching process. high achievement.
“In the past few years, Vietnam Sports has discovered a number of cases of athletes testing positive for banned substances (doping substances). This is an urgent problem that the sports industry needs a thorough solution to overcome. We see an emerging problem due to lack of knowledge about doping substances and, more dangerously, athletes arbitrarily buying functional foods floating on the market without permission from doctors, coaches and centers. sports training. This also warns that, in addition to the benefits of dietary supplements to enhance sports performance, the risk of violating the use of banned substances is not small," Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong said and recommended that experts Scientists, coaches, athletes and sports managers pay close attention to this issue.
At the Conference, leading scientists and experts discussed many opinions about the role of dietary supplements in improving performance and preventing doping of high-performance athletes. In most of the opinions mentioned, dietary supplements are increasingly widely used in the community and sports practitioners, especially by high-performance athletes.
A recent statistic shows that nearly 60% of the Vietnamese population over 18 years old use dietary supplements, on average each person uses 2-4 types of dietary supplements per day in rural areas, and 4-6 types in cities, a usage rate Used even more in middle-aged and elderly people. Most top athletes use about 3-5 types every day.
Some types of dietary supplements have been proven to have clear effects in helping to improve performance, increase metabolism and immunity, shorten recovery time, support bone and joint protection, increase muscle, as well as prevent disease. A number of chronic and acute diseases can occur in athletes. Meanwhile, there are many types whose effects are scientifically unknown and need to be researched further to have enough evidence of their effects on athletes.
There are also many cases where athletes use incorrect types, dosages, quality... which has led to negative health consequences, even reduced competition performance, exposure to banned substances (doping), leading to loss of money and disability. The inspection and supervision of food quality by the authorities also has many shortcomings, leading to a flood of poor quality food supplements, fake goods, imitation goods... which negatively affect human health. consumption.
Answering the question of why athletes have to use dietary supplements, experts and scientists say that top athletes have a very high intensity of exercise in training and competition, so their diets require a lot of energy and nutrients. , even 5-6 times higher than people who do not exercise.
With such a great demand, natural diets can hardly provide enough nutrients, which can lead to a number of related diseases: lack of energy, low BMI and fat index, fatigue, decreased performance; Skeletal muscle atrophy and pain due to insufficient protein intake; bone pain, osteoarthritis due to lack of calcium, vitamin D and other minerals; Anemia due to iron and folate deficiency, especially in female athletes, immunodeficiency and weakness, rapid aging due to the production of many oxidants during exercise.
Dietary supplements are used for the purpose of nutritional supplementation for missing natural meals, very convenient as replacement meals, quick meals right before, during and right after competition or training; Meals help replenish energy quickly with endurance sports, stretching, between matches, with consecutive matches after a few days, when traveling and missing meals...
The issue to pay attention to is which type of dietary supplement to choose to suit your needs, when and what dosage to use? In addition, there are also athletes who suffer from certain chronic diseases (diabetes mellitus, blood pressure, digestive disorders...), or some sports that require weight loss or rapid muscle mass gain. Using TPBS is a necessary and effective measure.
According to Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training Dang Ha Viet, Vietnamese sports are facing the situation that many athletes arbitrarily use and hide the use of drugs or functional foods while these products are widely sold on the market. school. This has led to very unfortunate penalties. For top athletes training for national teams, especially athletes aiming for Asiad and Olympic competition, nutritional factors before, during and after meals are very important.
How to choose suitable products, ensure nutrition, and contribute to improving physical strength and good performance for top athletes are issues that need to be discussed carefully at this Conference. In addition to the daily diet according to the regulations of the Ministry of Finance, supplementary products to help improve athletes' energy and physical strength are very necessary for top athletes.
“From a state management perspective, the Sports industry is gradually implementing and clearly separating what supplements are included in athletes' daily meals to understand which athletes are in need of support and supplementation. What can I do to improve my physical fitness and contribute to having a comfortable spirit to have the best performance?" said Mr. Dang Ha Viet.
It is known that after the conference, the National Sports Training Centers will coordinate with nutrition experts to develop scientific diets for athletes to improve performance. Vietnamese sports will also develop a process to use dietary supplements for athletes on national teams. And Yangmiwa will be the unit that accompanies TTVN and experts to develop a program to use dietary supplements for athletes in the near future.
